In the beginning….

It all started 12 years ago when Jamie said, “How are are we going to keep out of the poorhouse?” and Paula said “We could sell pie. “ And then it all began……..the first pie shed was born.

Jamie and Paula Eisenberg started Poorhouse Pies in 2009. Baking out of their “micro-home bakery” they would produce an impressive weekly average of 300 pies to sell out of their tiny garden shed, they fondly dubbed the “pie shed”. The self-serve, self-pay, in the true Vermont farm stand spirit, is part of the charm of this little grassroots business.

And then came the doughnuts!!!!!!!! They began making and selling all kinds of creative and traditional doughnuts on Sunday mornings. This began a local clamor of people who would line up all the way down the block waiting for these warm and delicious, fresh treats. Over the years Poorhouse Pies was written up by Yankee Magazine, featured on PBS (twice), and highlighted by countless local publications for their almost famous little pie shed.

The Covid pandemic brought floods of people from all over New England who drove to this “no contact”, Covid safe, comfort food destination. The demand was increasing and Paula and Jamie’s energy was decreasing. With such a tiny kitchen and no room “literally” to hire new staff to help, they were getting worn out. In 2021 they approached their friend Suzanne Tomlinson, a local restaurant woman who was of the entrepreneurial spirit, and said that they would like to “pass the pie” Suzanne accepted their business proposal and with honor, began plans to move the business to a new and larger bakery that could sustain the demands of the pie (and doughnut) loving customers. And so began Poorhouse Pies #Next Generation.
